County Road 888, which is the primary access road from Highway 50-the main road between Gunnison and Salida-is an easy, level drive during the summer months. During the winter months it's trickier--it's only seasonably maintained. The distance from the highway is roughly 8 miles, and while it's kept open for the first few miles through a local ranch, the remainder is only passible on snowmobiles, side by sides with tracks, snowshoers or skis. Fortunately, the road is not steep and there's very little concern about dangerous snow conditions. Most would consider the White Pine 'season' from June until November, although Mother Nature does her thing from time to time. During this time the temperatures are lovely and you can't beat the hiking, jeeping, exploring and relaxing! Many residents love to stay til the end of hunting season and use their cabins as their hunting lodge for the thousands of acres of public lands. Utilities are surprisingly good too--White Pine has a community water system that operates during the summer season which is included in the annual dues. There's conventional electric, a septic system and there are many options for TV and internet. Nothings better than the heat from the woodstove!
