May in Crested Butte

We are in the full off-season swing here in Crested Butte. The temps are a mix of snow, rain, and warm temps. The tourists are slim and the town is slow. There is much anticipation for the summer scenes like this below.

Vail Resorts Update

Crested Butte Mountain Resort. CBMR will open back up for downhill biking season in Mid-June.

Visitor numbers drop significantly in May. Time to grab your bikes out of storage and find the dry spots in the valley. For more detail, see the Gunnison Crested Butte Travel website.

A Local’s Tip

This is a great time to head down to Gunnison or Almont areas, where the snow has already melted out. Hartman Rock Recreation Area is where you will find many locals these days, biking, hiking, climbing, and camping.

Flat Top Trail or Forest Service Road 7860 is located just past Almont on 135. This is a great early season hike and a fantastic spot to see early season wildflowers.

The Gunnison River is also ready to fish, kayak, or raft and the water will continue to rise with each new warm day.

Please be considerate as to which trails to bike, hike, or run on. Make sure they are open and avoid any muddy areas.

Enjoy!
