There are a lot of “lessons” to be had in Crested Butte; including skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, biking, hiking, photography, painting, etc. The list goes on and on… This article is specifically talking about education in Crested Butte relating to the Crested Butte Community School (CBCS). Founded in 1997 the CBCS houses kindergarten through twelfth grade and has a population of around 700 students. The school has grown exponentially over the years and the staff is top notch. There is a conception out there that most “small schools” cannot provide education at a high level. This is untrue for CBCS; let’s take a look at some stats.
Education in Crested Butte
– CBCS is ranked #12 among Colorado schools
– Advanced Placement (AP) courses are offered with a participation rate of 67%
– Ranked #473 in national rankings
– A gold medal school
– 98% graduation rate
These are just a few highlights of CBCS and give a great indication of what the staff is like at the school. They take great pride in the students, school and the community. Crested Butte has seen a huge increase in the number of students and the kindergarten classes continue to grow year over year. Families are moving to the valley and locals are raising families here. Schooling is very important to a number of people and it’s surprising to most when they learn how great the CBCS in fact is.
Sports that are available to the students include basketball, hockey, track and field, soccer, volleyball and cross country. Not to mention the plethora of other activities for the students which include chess club, lego club, art club, Spanish club, music and even an after school yoga program. And what schools offer ski for PE? CBCS does! The elementary students ski once a week, first doing Alpine skiing and then Nordic skiing.
